I just returned from a whirlwind trip to New York City with Lauren. We were trying to count how many trips we’ve made (our first was in 2010) and we think it’s likely 8 or 9 (I lost my FB account to a hacker, so I can’t go back and look).
It was our third or fourth time staying at the Chelsea Cambria, which is a perfect location in the Flower District, which means we get to walk through the blooms on the sidewalk each morning. We also got to enjoy the amazing murals that we got to watch Alixandra Jade paint on our last trip.
We checked our luggage and then headed to Fotografiska New York. We loved the Best in Show Exhibit, particularly the 7 year old boy who seemed to be visiting with his Grandma and helped us get our phones adjusted correctly, so we could see some of the hidden imagery that only appears when photographed with a flash.
There were so many different ways of capturing photos of animals. It was such a fun exhibit.
It’s always awesome when we discover somewhere new to enjoy amazing art.
Speaking of discovering amazing art, we went through a different subway station and suddenly we discovered several walls filled with Nick Cave Mosaics … we discovered after the fact that the display is called SoundSuits.
And a kind lady offered to take our photo since she could clearly tell we were struggling to do a selfie that captured both of us and the mosaic in the same picture.
And as we walked down the street, we met Yana Schnitzler and her Phoenix Quilt Project. We each wrote something we wanted less of in our lives on a piece of fabric. Yana sews the words into her quilt, turns it into a skirt she wears in a performance, and then ultimately burns it to release the things everyone wants less of. A super-cool project.
We enjoyed Dim Sum at Dim Sum Sam where we got a Dim Sum Sampler and Beef Rice Noodles. I loved those crushed cucumbers.
And then we ended the night at one of our go to locations - Milk Bar for Cereal Milk Ice Cream with Corn Flake Crunch … a classic.
Day 1 was full and fabulous … especially getting to spend time in person with one of my dearest friends (who enjoys seeing all kinds of art & eating yummy food as much as I do).
