We decided to do our big museum on day 2 while the weather was warmest and our feet were freshest. We had to find a new breakfast haunt, since our original one didn’t re-open after the pandemic. We chose Fresh & Co, where we could get eggs made to order, and Lauren said the coffee was delicious.
Next stop was the Museum of Modern Art for the Ed Ruscha exhibit. It was so amazing, we spent hours wandering through the galleries admiring the smell of the chocolate room and the brush strokes and masking of each piece.
I enjoyed reading the transcripts available about the various pieces including the description of how he used masking to create the curve of the letters and created his own medium to paint using gunpowder soaked in water.
We loved so many, it’s hard to choose images for the post (if you want to see lots more, you can head over to my Instagram account @SmilynStef)
We loved how he moved through different mediums throughout his career at times just using white space or redaction, but almost always incorporating text or the absence of text into his designs.
Another favorite was the room dedicated to Jennifer Barlett’s Rhapsody exhibit. We were able to view it from the floors above to see the entire scope, and then when we got to that floor we could look at each of the grid-paper covered tiles up close. It was filled with inspiration.
Again, so hard to pick a reasonable amount of favorites to include in my post.
The combination of the vastness with the individual tiles was mesmerizing.
Here are a few more favorites from the visit. Stephanie & Lauren hanging out with Frida.
Stephanie contemplating Dali.
We spent over five hours admiring the art and also ate a lovely lunch in the Cafe (because when our hunger calls, we both get equally hangry)
I really wanted to try a dessert a friend has always raved about, so supper was at Ilili where we planned our meal around Knefe for dessert. We enjoyed Falafel, the most amazing tomato & watermelon salad and the lightest pita bread either of us had ever eaten.
We also shared Duck/Chicken Samosas before our amazing dessert.
The meal was so so good.
We ended the day finding more fun art in the subway.
Another successful day in New York City.
