it has been much too long since we were able to hit the open road. Today we stayed in Davenport and enjoyed touring the Figge Museum.
This piece by Ukrainian-born artist Louise Nevelson was one of my favorites with its monochromatic found item design.
We also loved this piece by Russian-born artist Morris Kantor
One of my favorites was this large canvas called Red April by Sam Gilliam.
The main exhibit was the art of Doris Lee. I fell in love with her fabric designs.
There was also a wonderful selection of Haitian art that took me back to the time I spent on the island in High School. I still have a small painting I bought from a local artist at the market.
By the time we were finished, we were famished, so we headed to Miss Phay Cafe for a late lunch. As I have noted previously, if there is whole fish on the menu, I’ll be having it … and I believe this is the best whole fish meal I’ve ever had. It was served with noodles, two sauces, herbs and peanuts to be eating in little lettuce wrap bundles. The Spicy Tamarind Sauce and Spicy Garlic Sauce were good enough to just eat with a spoon.
Rod had the Ca Ri Curry, and he at every single bit (okay he shared a few with me).
We watched the Iowa men’s basketball team win the Big Ten Tournament, then we watched the Tournament Selection for the NCAA Tournament.
After that we wandered down to City Loafers to end the day with some snacks and adult beverages. Overall a wonderful first day of our road trip.
