One of my favorite local artists, Dori Patrick, was teaching a free mixed media art class at the local library Friday night, so I manged to leave work early (which is basically on-time for me) and make it there to have some painty, inky fun.
Here is my finished piece (on the left) next to Dori's sample piece on the right (you can click on all of the pictures to take them to full size to see details).
We started by applying three colors of paint to a blank canvas, leaving some white space.
Next we collaged papers using Mod Podge. I brought along some of my gel press prints and marbled paper, so that's what I used (although the library provided all sorts of fun papers).
Next we did a rough sketch of the different layers of our landscape, houses, trees (and in my case a VW Mini Bus ... hey, I just went with what I saw). Then we used paints to block off the sections (yes, I got a more than a little paint on me too).
We added more scribbles, doodles, collage, and paint to finish our designs. I made my road using a phone book page.
Whimsical is certainly outside of my comfort zone, but I thought I did a decent job for a 2 1/2 hour project. It was a lot of fun playing with lots of different artsy materials.
Looks like a lot of painty fun!
